Roll Over Tarps

This is probably the oldest automatic tarp system in the industry. Yes, it is the oldest in theory of how it works, but it's the components which make this system get better and better with each year. There are many different types of materials used between Mesh and Solid Vinyls, and the hardware that attaches to the truck or trailer vary so much you need the experience of a knowledgeable manufacturer to help you pick the right products for your application.

We would be happy to help you design the right product for your application. Please review the website to compare hardware and materials so you are more confident with the products used for your system.

General
The tarp is attached to one side of the trailer and is rolled over the width of the trailer to the opposite side. The tarp is held tightly in place.

Basic Types in the industry

  1. One system is held down with straps
  2. The other system is held down by rolling under an aluminum extrusion with a locking handle. More detail is show in the parts & accessories section below.

System Components

Attaching Tarp to Trailer
  • Screws & Washers: The tarp is attached to the entire length of the trailer by screwing through a re-enforced area along the edge of the tarp. On the same side of the trailer Tarp Stops are installed to prevent the tarp from falling off the top of the trailer when the tarp is in the "rolled up" or "stored" position.
  • Pipe Assembly: A 3/4" galvanized pipe is installed into a pocket in the tarp that goes the length of the trailer. The pipe and tarp are bolted onto the side of the trailer using pipe clips bolted to the side of the trailer. Tarp Stops are installed to prevent the tarp from falling off the top of the trailer when the tarp is in the "rolled up" or "stored" position.
  • Pipe Brackets: Brackets are bolted to the side of the trailer. The pipe assembly fits into the brackets and is held in place. The pipe brackets typically have tarp stops incorporated into them to prevent the tarp from falling off the top of the trailer when the tarp is in the "rolled up" or "stored" position.

Roll Pipe
A 2" aluminum pipe is installed in a pocket in the tarp. The pipe is long enough to extend past the length of the tarp and is used to roll the tarp across the width of the trailer. The pipe has to be the right length to avoid interfering with the trailer doors and keep the tarp from falling into the trailer.

Tensioning System
  • SUR-LOC: An extrusion is attached near the top of the trailer (on the opposite side of the trailer that the tarp is mounted to) The tarp is rolled over the edge of the trailer. When you continue to roll the tarp it binds into the extrusion and holds the tarp in place. The handle must be held in a bracket to keep tension on the tarp to prevent tarp from rolling out.
  • Ratchet Straps: The tarp is rolled over the edge of the trailer. A combination of heavy 2" webbing straps, cables and ratchet straps are used to tension the tarp down to prevent tarp from lifting.

Front of the Tarp
It is always important to prevent air from getting under the tarp. With a tall trailer it is even more important because a loose tarp can get caught on a bridge and really screw up your day! Here are some methods we use.
  • Wind Deflector: A low profile wind deflector is welded or bolted to the front of the trailer and the front of the tarp is positioned directly behind the deflector.
  • Partial Bonnet: A flap is incorporated into the front of the tarp. This flap is tensioned over the front of the trailer using Bungee Cord and 2 ratchet straps.
